‘Troughton  &  Simms’  5” Wye  Theodolite

This is a well-preserved example of a late Victorian ‘Wye’ theodolite with its signature 180-degree vertical circle. It is the typical 5-inch size, after the diameter of the horizontal circle. Both circles are engraved on silver inset into the brass circles, silver being able to bear a much finer engraving than brass. Both circles are graduated to 30-minute intervals, with vernier scales for reading to 1-minute of arc. This example is original without vernier magnifiers, as indicated by the complete absence of any mounting provisions. They were typically an optional-extra that could be provided at the time of ordering for a small extra cost, as seen in some of the suppliers’ catalogues from this period. The original purchaser of this item chose to take his readings with the naked eye. The horizontal plate slow-motion screw and clamp is however missing. One of the attractive features of this item is the round silver-faced compass on the horizontal plate. Another is the good condition of the original lacquer, which has the olive-bronze colouring commonly found in this period, especially on instruments by Troughton & Simms. While it has the usual scuffs, the lacquer coating is mostly intact. Another interesting feature is the ‘Littlejohn Traversing Head’ on the tripod, used to assist in centering. The mahogany fitted-box in which this item comes, is in good condition, and has a somewhat distressed leather cover. Overall, this item is recommended as a particularly fine example of its type.
