Cooke, Troughton, & Simms Theodolite

This is a superb example of this type. Not only is it in very good order, but it has an absolutely complete set of original accessories, a far as we can tell. In the box lid is the round black diaphragm puller. In the back left of the base of the box is a double ended spanner. In front of it is the plumbob which has a threaded section above the long steel tip which screws into a small metal bracket to secure it in the box. To the right of this is firstly the round black oil canister with its dipper for applying lubrication in the field, a camels-hair lens brush, another open-ended spanner, and three capstan bars of varying sizes. In the front left of the box is a ray-shade which fits over the objective end of the telescope to prevent direct sunlight from falling on the objective glass during observations. The tripod is an original C.T.S. type with their monogram engraved on it and is in good order. The instrument has serial no. V.O. 11561 and was probably once used by a New Zealand government department as it has an accompanying ‘O.H.M.S.’ label on which has been written; “Theodolite, C. T & S., S.S. 36842, Ser. No. V.O. 11561”.  On the inside lip of the box lid (not visible in picture) the initials “M.J.D.” have been brushed in black paint, possibly signifying the department surveyor who had the primary use of this theodolite. This item is thoroughly recommended for the collector who insists on the best available example of each type in his collection.
